Secure Bike Parking and Green Star Ratings

In this day and age employers are focusing on employee stability and satisfaction by creating positive, friendly and sustainable workplace environments.

In 2010 Colliers International ran an Office Tenant Survey and found that one of the fastest emerging ways to attract and retain staff was to provide secure bike parking facilities and showers. Nerida Conisbee, Colliers National Director of Research said “tenants are seeing bike parking as equally important as car parking.”

Buildings in cities accross Australia are installing bike parking facilities in their car parks in an effort to attract and retain tenants. New building projects are including secure bike parking in their original specifications and this goes a long way to helping the project achieve a Green Star rating from the Australian Green Building Council (GBCA). Launched in 2002, the GBCA is a national not-for-profit organisation committed to developing a sustainable property industry by driving the adoption of green building practices through market based solutions.

The Green Star rating tool has been created by the GBCA to guide the design or construction process by using 6 stars to rate and measure performance. There are 2 rounds of assessment available and any project assessed to be below 4 stars is not eligible for a rating.

If a project is awarded a Certified Rating, it will receive a framed certificate, award letter, marketing kit and relevant Green Star logos.

Projects that incorporate secure bike parking facilities are given extra points and can earn up to 3 points if certain criteria is met. Please visit the GBCA’s website for more information.
